A statewide Leader in Me commitment lost $2 million in funding to a last-minute gubernatorial budget cut this quarter, delaying new school allotments in that state indefinitely (Q3 FY2026 earnings call). FranklinCovey expects the funding to be restored in the next fiscal budget. Nothing in the public record guarantees that timeline. If your district’s Leader in Me funding is administered through a state-level commitment rather than a direct district contract, this is the first concrete evidence of what a budget-cycle disruption actually looks like in dollars, not just theory.
The underlying program metrics are strong. School retention held at 84% in fiscal 2025, and FranklinCovey added 624 new schools that same year, growing the global base to nearly 8,000 schools. Those numbers support renewal on program merit alone.
The cost conversation is where renewals get harder, and it is not hypothetical. Educators on Reddit describe Leader in Me sentiment in genuinely polarized terms:
Praise for measurable improvements in school culture and student leadership outcomes.
Criticism of the program as having a “corporate money grab feel,” with some educators citing “creeping religious overtones” in the framework’s content.
