Florida’s new artificial intelligence requirements give districts a clearer deadline for deciding how student-facing AI will be governed in classrooms. By July 1, 2027, local policies will need to address parent notice, opt-in consent, alternatives for students who do not participate, records of student interactions, adult supervision, and controls over autonomous functionality.

For district leaders, the challenge is broader than writing a policy. Schools need to know where AI is already being used, how students interact with it, what happens when families opt out, and whether staff can monitor or disable it when necessary.

The rule requires parent notices to identify the application or platform, grade levels, subject areas, the nature of student interaction, and whether the tool provides automated feedback or instructional responses. When students use the tool directly, parents must also receive an opt-in choice and information about an alternative non-AI instructional tool that is “substantively comparable in instructional quality and access.”
