Changes to Parent PLUS and Graduate PLUS are reaching campuses just as families and graduate students finalize enrollment plans. For vendors, the immediate opportunity sits in the operational complexity these rules create: institutions need better visibility into borrowing limits, enrollment intensity, legacy eligibility, and the financing gaps that emerge before disbursement.

1. Federal credit limits are creating new workflow and product requirements
An institution can admit a student, award aid, register credits, and still discover before disbursement that the student's financing plan no longer works. That creates new requirements for the systems connecting admissions, registration, financial aid, billing, and student advising.
Beginning July 1, 2026, Direct PLUS Loans are no longer available to most new graduate and professional students, while legacy borrowers retain access only under limited conditions. Parent PLUS borrowing is also capped for new and non-legacy borrowers at $20,000 annually and $65,000 in aggregate per dependent student.
These changes make borrower status and program history more important data points. A student who stops out, changes programs, transfers, or exhausts an exception may lose access to financing that previously supported enrollment.
