Pearson is converting from a print-dependent publisher into a platform business built on assessment, workforce skills validation, and Virtual Learning. H1 2026 results show the pivot gaining traction. Revenue grew 4% underlying to £1,779 million, adjusted operating profit rose 14% underlying to £276 million, and adjusted operating margin expanded 140 basis points to 15.5%. Virtual Learning drove the improvement, with revenue up 19% underlying and adjusted operating profit up 31% underlying, proof the platform strategy can produce real earnings growth once a segment is actually working.

One thing worth flagging: English Language Learning moved the other direction, with revenue down 3% underlying and PTE test volume falling to 474,000 from 491,000, and former Pearson product and engineering leaders say the company cannot compete for frontier AI talent against Meta, OpenAI, and Google. Layered against a Higher Education business that has lost 5 to 10 points of share over the past decade, Pearson's platform story still depends on segments the company has not yet proven it can fix. This Dossier lays out what would resolve each question, and why neither is settled by the public record alone.

Sources and Methods

Dossiers are built from primary documents: SEC filings, earnings call and investor day transcripts, management presentations, press releases, and trade press. We also work the channels where product and operating problems surface before they reach an earnings call, including App Store, Google Play, and Trustpilot reviews, and structured sentiment research on Reddit Answers. Equity analyst commentary is used to map where the sell side disagrees and is treated as opinion, not evidence.

The Intelligence Council is editorially independent. No company reviews a Dossier before publication.

What’s Inside This Dossier

  1. The Central Question. The single unresolved strategic question on which the company is being judged, along with a dated scorecard of where each proof point currently stands.

  2. Vital Signs. Revenue, enrollment or user metrics, retention, margin, and the other numbers that separate the bull and bear case, pulled directly from filings and earnings calls.

  3. What This Means For You. Distinct, action-oriented implications for competitors and vendors, buyers, and partners and investors.

  4. Signals Dashboard. Six categories of forward-looking indicators, from customer momentum to governance risk, each with a status and the evidence behind it.

  5. Market Reality Check. Where the analyst community actually splits, what management won't answer directly on earnings calls, and whether discovery and engagement are growing or shrinking.

  6. Commercial Momentum. What the company signed, launched, retreated from, and let go, across product, distribution, and partnerships, in one view.

  7. Competitive Position. The specific mechanism by which each real competitor is gaining or losing ground, not a list of names.

  8. Business Model Anatomy. How the company's revenue mix actually breaks down, and what has structurally changed in pricing, distribution, or the underlying model in the last 24 months.
